A 10,000 mAh power bank does not deliver 10,000 mAh at every output voltage. The headline capacity is commonly based on the internal cell pack at its nominal voltage, while the USB output is delivered after voltage conversion and circuit losses. Wholesale buyers should therefore specify watt-hours, cell-level capacity, rated output capacity and test conditions separately instead of using one mAh number for every claim.
This is both a technical issue and a returns-prevention issue.
Convert the cell rating to energy first
Use:
Wh = (mAh ÷ 1000) × nominal voltage
For example, a 10,000 mAh cell pack rated at a nominal 3.7 V contains approximately:
(10,000 ÷ 1000) × 3.7 = 37 Wh
The calculation does not say how much energy will appear at the output. The power bank uses some energy for voltage conversion, protection, indicators, control electronics, cables, and other losses.
Why output mAh changes with voltage
Milliamp-hours describe charge, not energy. If the same available energy is expressed at a higher output voltage, the equivalent amp-hours are lower.
An illustrative calculation—before conversion loss—is:

Real measured output will be lower and depends on the test. This table is an energy demonstration, not a product promise.
Define the output test
If a supplier states a rated output capacity or efficiency, ask for:
- exact model and sample version;
- output port and protocol;
- output voltage and current/load profile;
- starting charge condition;
- ambient and product temperature conditions;
- cable and measurement equipment;
- cutoff behavior;
- sample count;
- measured Wh and/or Ah;
- calculation method and pass criterion.
One efficiency percentage without conditions is not enough to compare two designs. A power bank may behave differently at light load, maximum load, different protocols, or elevated temperature.
“How many phone charges?” is an estimate
To estimate charges, compare energy—not the two mAh labels alone:
estimated charges ≈ usable power-bank output energy ÷ energy required by the phone
Then account for the phone’s own charging loss, battery age, use while charging, temperature, cable, charging protocol, and cutoff behavior.
A defensible retail page can show a range with named assumptions. “Charges any phone three times” is likely to disappoint some buyers and customers.
What belongs in a wholesale specification
For capacity and output, include:
- Cell pack capacity and tolerance.
- Nominal voltage.
- Watt-hour rating.
- Rated capacity at the stated output condition, where applicable.
- Input profiles.
- Output profiles for each port.
- Combined output when multiple ports are used.
- Supported protocols.
- Low-current mode behavior, if included.
- Cutoff and indicator behavior.
- Test method and acceptance criteria.
Also lock the approved cell model or controlled alternatives. If the cell changes, repeat the review needed for product performance, safety evidence, transport identity, and market files.
Three purchasing red flags
Capacity is discussed only in mAh
Ask for Wh, nominal voltage, and rated output basis.
The supplier promises a high output but cannot show per-port behavior
Request a port table and simultaneous-use table. USB-C is a connector, not proof of USB Power Delivery or a particular wattage.
The label, test summary, and quotation show different values
Stop and reconcile the product identity before artwork or production. Do not “fix” the mismatch by changing only the printed label.
Turn the technical answer into better packaging
A clear retail package can state:
- verified capacity and Wh;
- maximum input and output with the relevant port;
- compatible protocol/device categories without overpromising;
- included cable;
- approximate recharge time only with its test setup;
- safety and disposal information required for the market;
- manufacturer/importer and traceability information as applicable.
This gives the customer a reason to choose the product and reduces preventable support tickets.
